The Yangtze drains one-fifth of the land area of the People's Republic of China and its river basin is home to one-third of the PRC's population. Along with the Yellow River, the Yangtze is the most important river in the history, culture and economy of China. The prosperous Yangtze River Delta generates as much as 20% of the PRC's GDP. The Yangtze River flows through a wide array of ecosystems and is itself habitat to several endemic and endangered species including the Chinese alligator and the Yangtze sturgeon. For thousands of years, people have used the river for water, irrigation, sanitation, transportation, industry, boundary-marking and war. Now China has increased water releases from the massive Three Gorges Dam to try to help fight the problem. China Report has more. PKG Central China's Hunan is one of China's largest rice-growing provinces. It produced about 30 million tonnes of rice in 2010. In Hunan, since January the inflow of four branches of the Yangtze River has reached only 33.5 billion cubic meters, 46 percent less than that recorded during the same period in previous years. Furthermore, the drought has affected more than 293 thousand hectares of crops and left 820,000 people short of drinking water. The drought has also plagued neighboring Hubei Province for months. Local officials say, in Jianli County, the largest rice-growing county in Hubei, waters levels in its major rivers have dropped to record lows.
