The film was a box office hit, grossing a worldwide total of $103 million. Griffith and Weaver were nominated for Academy Award for Best Actress and Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, respectively. Griffith lost to Jodie Foster. Weaver lost to Geena Davis. Both actresses won the Golden Globe for their work in the film. Weaver was nominated for Best Actress for another film that year (Gorillas in the Mist), so she lost to Jodie Foster as well.
