Cummings was born September 4th, 1982 and raised in Georgetown, Washington, D.C. Her mother Patti is a PR executive and her father is a venture capitalist. She went to Holy Trinity School and then to high school at St. Andrew's Episcopal School in Potomac, Maryland, graduating in 2000. She began her college career at the University of North Carolina before subsequently transferring to the University of Pennsylvania. She graduated magna cum laude from Penn in 2004, with a degree in communications and film. Cummings presented Punk'd on MTV in 2004 and the same year starred in a low-budget thriller, EMR, which was screened at Cannes. She appeared in the San Francisco audition for Last Comic Standing in 2008, though she didn't pass the showcase.
