Walter Bernstein

Walter Bernstein (August 20, 1919) is an American screenwriter and film producer who was blacklisted by the Hollywood movie studios in the 1950s. Bernstein was born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Hannah (née Bistrong) and Louis Bernstein, a teacher. He attended Dartmouth College, where he got his first writing job, as a film reviewer for the campus newspaper, and where he also joined the Young Communist League. En 1974, se gradúa de Licenciado en Lengua y Literatura Inglesas en la Universidad de La Habana y comienza a trabajar en el Centro de Información Cinematográfica del ICAIC. Se inició como crítico de cine, colaborando durante varios años en diferentes publicaciones especializadas como el periódico Granma y la revista Cine Cubano. Se desempeñó como asistente de dirección en varios largometrajes cubanos hasta que pasó a dirigir documentales, por los que recibió numerosos premios nacionales e internacionales. Su primer largometraje de ficción fue Adorables Mentiras, una coproducción del ICAIC y TVE. Antes del inicio de la preproducción, Chijona fue invitado por Robert Redford al Sundance Institute por espacio de un mes, donde participó en dos talleres: guión y dirección bajo la tutela de escritores como Christopher Hampton, Matthew Robbins, Ring Lardner Jr, Walter Bernstein y directores como Sydney Pollack, Oliver Stone y James Brooks.
