And what we do to start teaching that is we do one second at a time. Dog stays for one second, 2 seconds, 3 seconds. We release it. Add some more seconds in. We don't try to do a full one minute at a time. It is just too much for the dog, and they will end up breaking the command and then you put them back into a command, and then that turns into a game. They break, they go back into the command, they break, they go back into the command. So we want them to stay in position for a certain duration of time. What we usually do is we get them in a 'sit' position, and we'll put the food out a little forward like that. "Sit". We just remind them of the position they're in. Keep our hand a little above their rear. If they go to get up, we just gently cup them back into a 'sit' position. Then we use the 'free' command, "Free", and we allow them to go get the treat.
