DARYL SHERMAN / WYCLIFFE GORDON Honor JOHNNY MERCER Video
Miss Sherman, that gifted singer and pianist, has been performing a tribute to Johnny Mercer on Monday nights at the Oak Room of the Algonquin Hotel in New York City. On June 8, 2009, I captured her and her able colleagues -- that's Wycliffe Gordon on trombone and vocal, James Chirillo on guitar, and Boots Maleson on bass -- performing one of my favorite Mercer songs, THE BATHTUB RAN OVER AGAIN, a sweetly tender love song about what romantic ardor can do to the neighbors downstairs. (Daryl and Wycliffe do this song on Daryl's new Arbors CD, which is -- of course! -- a tribute to Mercer, who would have turned 100 this year Recorded by Michael Steinman.
