Boris Karloff stars as Cabman Gray in this 1945 movie based on Robert L. Stevensons story, produced by Val Lewton and directed by Robert Wise. It is arguably Karloffs greatest performance, the actor obviously relishing the well-written dialogue, lending real depth to a multi-faceted character. Gray is a man who wears brutality as an armour against a harsh world. But the film is very much an ensemble piece: Note the unsung Henry Daniell as Dr. MacFarlane, and Bela Lugosi as the doctor's butler. It is sad to watch this proud actor in what is obviously a supporting role, and yet it is one of his best. For once he is playing it straight and is excellent throughout - his heavy accent suiting the character very well.
