CHEN: A fatal trip for African migrants trying to reach land... and freedom in Spain. More than a dozen have perished on the trans-continental boat trip. Here's more. STORY: Many of the 34 people who survived the latest attempt to reach Spain from north Africa were so ill they had to be carried ashore. Another 14 migrants didn't make it. They are thought to have died from heat exhaustion during five days at sea. More than half the victims were young children. Red Cross volunteers are doing what they can to help. [Fran Vicente, Red Cross Coordinator]: "Many of the men and women were in bad shape and we're slowly transferring them. We're trying to calm the mothers who have lost their children. We're providing them with psychological support and the volunteers are trying to calm the situation." The migrants' deadly voyage and its tragic end comes just days after 14 Nigerians perished when their boat capsized in heavy seas off the Spanish coast. Thousands of Africans are feared to have lost their lives making the dangerous crossing. Thousands more have made it, prompting the Spanish government to toughen up its line on illegal immigration. It's vowing to send back anyone who enters without a visa.
