ADVENTURES OF RED RYDER SERIAL TRAILER 1941 DON "RED" BARRY Video
Theatrical trailer for the 1941 Republic serial, THE ADVENTURES OF RED RYDER, starring Don "Red" Barry, Noah Beery, Vivian Coe and Tommy Cook. Republic acquired the rights to the popular comic strip drawn by Fred Harman and used it as a vehicle to build their up and coming star, Houston-born Donald Barry (real name Donald Barry De Acosta) into a cowboy hero. Totally miscast as the the lanky, fighting readhead, Barry, who was 5' 4 1/2", could emote more convincingly than most saddle stars, and, under the expert direction of William Witney and John English coupled with the Republic technical expertise and superb stunting by David Sharpe doubling for Barry, the serial was, and remains, one of the finest of all western cliffhangers. Barry went on to become a popular western star, leading man, producer and, eventually, a well-establishd character actor, though it is reputed that his abrasive, demanding personality did not endear him to many of his co-workers. He committed suicide after a domestic dispute in 1980.
