Ms. Gates is a Fellow of the Yale Corporation, served as the Henry J. Heinz II Director of the Yale University Art Gallery from 1987-1994, and Director of the Seattle Art Museum from 1994-2009. Ms. Gates received her B.A. from Stanford University in Asian History; an Honors diploma in Chinese Language and Culture from the École Nationale des Langues Orientales Vivantes, Paris; an M.A. in Oriental and Chinese studies from the University of Iowa and a Ph.D. in Art History from Yale University.
