On a trip to Morocco, Santiago DĂ­az Herrera and his best friend Marcos Lombardo attend a fencing tournament, while a treacherous plot unfolds back home in Argentina. Alberto Lombardo, Marcos' father, arranges the killing of Horacio DĂ­az Herrera, Santiago's father. As a national judge, Horacio was due to sentence Alberto for the crimes he committed during the military regime. Santiago is also set up and arrested in Morocco, and Marcos returns to Argentina declaring Santiago's death. Eleven years later, Santiago escapes from prison and returns home to take revenge on his supposed best friend. He creates a new identity for himself with the help of a surgeon named Victoria and teams up with his new friend, IĂąaki, to seek justice. This telenovela has been one of the most popular in Latin America. An international hit, Montecristo has been broadcast with great success in more than 50 countries and has lead to the remakes in seven countries as well.
