Twenty-five years earlier in a drunken state, he deposited $40,000 in a bank in Hangover, North Dakota under the pseudonym Rupert X. Humperdink. When he tries to withdraw the money, the bank teller, Lionel Baker, who has been stealing from the account, prevents him from doing so because he cannot prove he is Humperdink. They agree to split the money. When Louise arrives, Springer is arrested for the murder of Humperdink. Lionel and Louise skip town.
