Umineko no Naku Koro ni takes place in the year 1986, during the time frame of October 4 and October 5 on a secluded island named Rokkenjima (六軒島). The head of a wealthy family named Kinzo Ushiromiya, who lives on and owns Rokkenjima, is near death, and eight of his family members arrive on the island to discuss how Kinzo's assets will be divided once he is dead. Also on the island are three family members who live there, five of Kinzo's servants, and his personal physician. After the eight family members arrive, a typhoon traps them on the island and shortly after people start to get mysteriously murdered. Due to how the murders are committed, it seems impossible to have been done by the hands of a human, which leads to the idea that a witch is committing the murders, because it is only possible with magic. In a mystery novel, if you cannot deduce how a murder was committed, then it seems like the only possible way is through magic. Umineko is a story of deception and delusions. The Metaworld is an imaginary world that does not exist, nor does magic exist. It exists as a crutch to help the viewer think. Scenes being displayed from island Battler's eyes are reality. There are no tricks here. Scenes that island Battler is not involved in are subjective, they may or may not have happened. Scenes involving magic are purely a disguise. Magic is used to disguise the truth as to how the murder was committed, but there are many clues within so the viewer can form their own ideas as to how the murders could have been done.
