The Murder of Mary Phagan, a 1987 two-part TV miniseries made by Orion Pictures Corporation and distributed by National Broadcasting Company (NBC), is a dramatization of the story of Leo Frank, a factory manager charged and convicted with murdering a 13-year-old girl, a factory worker named Mary Phagan, in Atlanta, Georgia in 1913. The trial was sensational and controversial. After Frank's legal appeals had failed, the governor of Georgia in 1915 commuted his death sentence to life imprisonment. If I am wrong, please do let me know. :) Mary Phagan was a young girl, age 14, living in the state of Georgia. She worked at the National Pencil Company. Her job was running the machine that inserted the erasers at the end of the pencil. On Saturday 26, 1913 , which was Confederate Memorial Day she went to the factory to collect her pay. She went to see Leo Frank, the superintendent of the factory. Her hours and therefor pay had been short that week due to a shortage in the metal for her machine. She spoke with Frank asking if more metal had come in to which he told her no. She left, and Frank was the last person to see her alive. Hours later, around 3am the police were called after Newt Lee the night watchman found her body. The first suspects were Newt Lee, and friends of Mary Phagan but suspicion soon was focused on Leo Frank. There were reports that he often flirted and carried on inappropriately with Mary. Jim Conley was the black janitor at the factory and eventually said the Frank had offered to pay him to dispose of the body, later on telling the Frank would have women in his office on Saturdays, having Conley act as his lookout. Other employees testified at the trial to being harassed. Eventually Frank was found guilt and sentenced to hang. In 1915 he was granted clemency and his sentence commuted to life in prison.
