The movie then recounts the story of Gavin and his love for Shana (Liv Tyler), his neighbor's wife. When Shana's husband, a fundamentalist Christian named Joe (Patrick Wilson), found out that Gavin has been sleeping with his wife, he demanded that Gavin jump off a building to prove his love for Shana despite his disbelief in an afterlife; otherwise, Shana would be killed.
