It stars Vincent Perez, Rachel Weisz, Ian McKellen, Joss Ackland, Kathy Bates, Zoë Wanamaker and Tom Bell and was directed by Beeban Kidron. The story concerns Yanko Góral a Ukrainian who is swept overboard during a storm on his way to America. The storm causes the ship to be wrecked off the coast of Cornwall killing all left on board. Soon after it is discovered that he can play chess his situation changes as the locals begin to treat him in a more civilised manner. It is the third filming of "Amy Foster".
