Lang was born in New York City, the son of Theresa (née Volmer) and Eugene Lang, a prominent entrepreneur and philanthropist who has reportedly given away $150 million. Eugene has never left his son or his siblings an inheritance, believing they each needed to learn to become self-sufficient. Lang's mother is Irish Catholic, and his father is Jewish (Lang's paternal grandparents were immigrants from Hungary). Lang attended the school PS 178 in Jamaica Estates, Queens.
