In late 1989 he relocated from South Africa to the United States when he was offered an international tennis scholarship by the University of West Alabama. He represented their tennis and football teams and was also recognized by the Alpha Psi Omega honor society for his participation in collegiate theatre. After performing in regional and community theater in Alabama and Mississippi, he relocated to New York in 1992 to pursue an acting career.
