The story of this movie is based on the idea of the continued existence of a prehistoric super-predator called the Megalodon. Ben Carpenter (John Barrowman) and his co-worker Esai skip out on work with him to go scuba diving for lobster. During his dive, Ben pries a large tooth out of an underwater fiber optic cable. Later, Ben tries to identify the shark from the tooth, emailing a picture of it to a research center. That night, Cat Stone (Jennifer McShane) views the photo and quickly heads to Mexico. She initially tells Ben that it was from a normal shark, then calls in a film crew because she recognized the tooth as coming from a Megalodon, a prehistoric shark long believed to be extinct.
