Kirkland was named after her mother, fashion editor Sally Kirkland, who was a fashion editor at Vogue and LIFE magazines, and was raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The following year, she gave a widely acclaimed performance in the classic underground film Coming Apart. In the 1970s, she had small roles in popular films such as The Sting, The Way We Were, A Star Is Born and Private Benjamin. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress in 1987 for Anna, for which she won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Drama. Kirkland currently (as of 2010) hosts a show on the syndicated HealthyLife Radio Network.
