To fans of LA's hip hop underground, the Freestyle Fellowship's 1993 debut album,Innercity Griots,Executive produced by Kedar Massenburg,the politically charged,jazz-fueled manifesto includes such visionary songs as "Bullies On The Block","Cornbread" and the indelible "Inner City Boundaries." It seemed far ahead of its time,taking equal influence from Ice-T, The Watts Prophets, Black Uhura and Les McCann. More than anything,however, the Fellowship provided us with hard evidence,through Mikah Nine, Aceyalone,Mtulazajl Peace, Self Jupiter,the Earthquake Brothers and DJ Kiilu that the underground was alive and screaming. The city of Angels was home of the Heavyweights. Four-plus years later, with hip-hop suffocating itself and hell-bent on commercialism, Aceyalone and Micah 9 return (with third member Abstract Rude of Abstract Tribe Unique) in the form of Haiku D'Etat. Backed by a deft jazz quintet, their live performance--as part of the recent Ocean Floor Records showcase at San Francisco's Transmission Theater--was rejuvenating. With a 12-inch out on Ocean Floor and a album coming out later this year, the trio of lyricist ripped through older scriptures like "Inner City..."as well as new joints "Los Dangerous" (What a wonderfull world to have at my disposal/ And those who know if you abuse it, then you lose it/ But whose is it to begin with/) We started out godlike/ Now what's it gonna end with?" and Still R appin', while the Broun Fellini's David Boyce sent sax squawks ...
