Her mother, Vivian Ayers (for whom the mother in The Fresh Prince of Bel Air was named), was a Pulitzer-prize nominated artist, poet, playwright, scholar, and publisher. Her father, Andrew Arthur Allen (d. 1984), was an orthodontist and dentist.
