Only the Valaint Capt. Richard Lance is unjustly held responsible for the death of the beloved Lt. Holloway, massacred by Indians. Holloway is killed while escorting a dangerous Indian chief to another fort's prison and the chief escapes. Lance takes a small group of army misfits to an abandoned nearby army fort to defend a mountain pass against the Indian assault he expects is coming. The men in his small group hate Capt. Lance, but soon realize that Lance's survival instincts, military knowledge and leadership are the only chance they have of staying alive.
