Nicolas Cowan was born in 1981 to an Filipino mother and Jewish-German father. At 6 years old, he became interested in acting.
Cowan made his feature film debut in the 1987 crime drama, No Man's Land starring Charlie Sheen, but was subsequently cut out of the film. He made his first appearance on TV Paradise in a one episode for small part. He went on to have a small part in the 1991 sci-fi horror film, Alligator II: The Mutation as Felipe.
