El-Sayed is a Bedouin village in Israel where for centuries deafness has been common among the townspeople. In El-Sayed, not being able to hear is not seen as a handicap so much as a personal difference -- a local form of sign language is understood by all, and the deaf and the hearing have been living and working side by side for so long no one considers it unusual. Deafness is so much a part of the fabric of El-Sayed that some even ponder if it's necessary or even desirable to be able to hear, so when the Israeli government institutes a program than will make cochlear implants (an electronic device that can restore hearing to many people who are fully or partially deaf) available to those who request them, many in El-Sayed regarded the news with disinterest, skepticism or even hostility. One father decides that he wants his son to be able to hear and arranges for him to receive an implant, launching a fierce debate in the community about the wisdom of this decision. Filmmaker Oded Adomi Leshem offers a look at life in this unusual community, as well as the conflict over cochlear implants, in his documentary Voices From El-Sayed, which received its world premiere at the 2009 ~Full Frame Documentary Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide less
