Mountain View is a city in Santa Clara County, in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. It is named for its views of the Santa Cruz Mountains. In 1956, Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory, the first company to develop silicon semiconductor devices in what came to be known as Silicon Valley, was established in the city by William Shockley. From a marketing standpoint Google, the enormously profitable Internet search engine, separated itself from the competition early on with its homepage, the iconic Google logo on a blank white screen. The stark design emphasizes the company's view that it's a search engine, not a news or entertainment site. The home page never changes, except for those Doodles, the artistic, sometimes funny, sometimes baffling renderings with the logo hidden within -- that occasionally appear and have become famous.
