The series is inspired by "elements from kung fu movies, '80s action flicks, and the over-the-top violence of the '70s exploitation era". The development of the first game was originally based on the popular actor martial artist Jean-Claude Van Damme, but that idea fell through and Mortal Kombat was born instead.
