Vinnie (Peter Falk) runs a pub and backroom betting operation in South Boston. When the local mob starts muscling in on his action and sends a high-ranking boss's nephew, Tony (Freddie Prinze Jr.), to check out his books, Vinnie (Peter Falk) mistakenly thinks he can handle it. Meanwhile, despite Tony's prodding, Vinnie tries to do right by helping Marybeth (Lauren Holly), the hardworking wife of a gambling addict who owes a large debt.
