He completed two weeks' work experience as a filing clerk at the offices of The Spectator magazine. Benitz went on to study history at the University of Edinburgh. As an undergraduate, he completed a nine-month program at University of Calcutta, after which in 2007 he embarked, with friend and fellow Edinburgh University student George Vlasto, in a journey from Calcutta to London by car.
