In 1977 McCarty graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelors degree in journalism. Her career in politics started in 1974 as an intern to U.S. House Majority Leader Thomas "Tip" O'Neill. From 1987 - 1990, she was a City Commissioner and Vice-Mayor of Delray Beach. In 2002, CEO Magazine named her as one of the 100 Most Powerful People in South Florida.
