Born Mary MacDonald in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, she received her education at Greensburgh (now Greensboro), Pennsylvania. She began her stage career in the Winter Garden in New York City with Al Jolson in The Passing Show of 1914 and Dancing Around.
