Loving Leah

Loving Leah is a television movie that aired on CBS as a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie on January 25, 2009. The film is directed by Jeff Bleckner and stars Adam Kaufman as an unobservant Jewish bachelor who feels compelled to marry his observant rabbi brother's widow, Leah (Lauren Ambrose) to honor him via the ancient Jewish custom of yibbum (levirate marriage). Loving Leah began as a play by Pnenah Goldstein and was brought to Hallmark by Ricki Lake, who also appears in a minor role in the film. In 1988, actress Ricki Lake made her big screen debut opposite Deborah Harry and Divine in Hairspray, the first of several films she would make with cult director John Waters. In 1993, after a very public battle with weight loss, she landed her own successful daytime talk show. More recently, she has produced the documentary The Business of Being Born, a critically acclaimed look into the politics of childbirth, produced and co-starred in the TV movie Loving Leah, and replaced Sharon Osbourne as host of the VH1 reality series Charm School.
