This town is believed to have been an inhabited settlement since as early as the 2nd millennium BC. It is known for its timeworn limestone monuments, including stone fortifications, churches and castles. After having sat in a state of decay from many years, it was brought back to life when in the 12th century it briefly served as the seat of the Pope. Ruins of megalithic wall made from stones which have been cut to slide together without the use of mortar, spans the circumference of the city. Though it suffered heavy civilian casualties and damage during World War II, it has since been renewed as a city filled with history and culture.
