O'Connor has played for Brentford since signing professional terms as a 17 year old. He made his league debut in a home goalless draw against Wycombe Wanderers on 19 February 2000. O'Connor is one of the most versatile players in the Football League. He started his career as a striker, but was played on the right wing under former Brentford manager Wally Downes. Under Martin Allen, he was converted to a right-back, which many believe to be his best position. In the 2007–08 season, following the arrival of right-backs, Ben Starosta and Craig Pead, O'Connor played predominantly in central midfield.
