Her paternal grandfather was Hollywood composer Jack Shilkret, the brother of composer Nathaniel Shilkret. Warner attended the Dalton School at age twelve. Warner earned a degree in theater arts from Brown University in 1987. After her graduation, Warner moved to Los Angeles, where she worked as a waitress while auditioning for acting. Warner appeared in two episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation: "Booby Trap" in 1989, and "Transfigurations" in 1990 as Christy Henshaw. Warner's most famous roles include her 1991 breakout co-starring performance with Michael J. Fox in Doc Hollywood, then her co-starring role with Billy Crystal in 1992's Mr. Saturday Night.
