LaPaglia was born in Adelaide, South Australia, the son of Maria Johannes (née Brendel), a secretary, and Gedio "Eddie" LaPaglia, an auto mechanic and car dealer. His other brother, Michael, is a car wholesaler in Los Angeles. He now lives in Santa Monica, California with his wife, actress Ursula Brooks and their daughter, Tilly. LaPaglia graduated from Rostrevor College, then the University of Adelaide with a degree in medicine. He worked three years as an emergency-room physician in Adelaide, Sydney and London.
