John Herndon "Johnny" Mercer (November 18, 1909 – June 25, 1976) was an American lyricist, songwriter and singer. He is best known as a lyricist, but he also composed music. He was also a popular singer who recorded his own songs as well as those written by others. From the mid-1930s through the mid-1950s, many of the songs Mercer wrote and performed were among the most popular hits of the time. Miss Sherman, that gifted singer and pianist, has been performing a tribute to Johnny Mercer on Monday nights at the Oak Room of the Algonquin Hotel in New York City. On June 8, 2009, I captured her and her able colleagues -- that's Wycliffe Gordon on trombone and vocal, James Chirillo on guitar, and Boots Maleson on bass -- performing one of my favorite Mercer songs, THE BATHTUB RAN OVER AGAIN, a sweetly tender love song about what romantic ardor can do to the neighbors downstairs.
