John Pyper-Ferguson was born in Mordialloc, Australia, the son of Olympic swimmer Kathleen (née MacNamee) and Richard Ferguson. After a brief period in his country of birth, he moved to Vancouver, Canada, where he was raised by his parents. Pyper-Ferguson went to high school at Handsworth Secondary School. He later graduated with distinction from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Performance. Pyper-Ferguson began his acting career on the prime time drama Hamilton's Quest (1986) as Sonny Hamilton.
