MORE Jiangsu is an eastern coastal province of the People's Republic of China. The name comes from jiang, short for the city of Jiangning, and su, for the city of Suzhou. The abbreviation for this province is "苏", the second character of its name. It is the province with the highest population density in China, though the provincial-level municipalities of Shanghai, Beijing, and Tianjin have a higher density. Jiangsu borders Shandong in the north, Anhui to the west, and Zhejiang and Shanghai to the south. Jiangsu has a coastline of over 1,000 kilometres along the Yellow Sea, and the Yangtze River passes through the southern part of the province. Since the initiation of economic reforms in 1990, Jiangsu has been a hot spot for economic development, and now has the highest GDP per capita of all Chinese provinces. The southern regions are richer than the north. Jiangsu is home to many of the world’s leading exporters of electronic equipment, chemicals and textiles. It has also been China's largest recipient of foreign direct investment since 2006. Its nominal GDP as of 2011, based on 2012 exchange rates, is half the size of India's. LESS |
