Born to Tom and Patti Hephner, Jeff Hephner grew up in the small town of Sand Creek near Adrian, Michigan, where he graduated from Sand Creek High School. In high school he played basketball and football. He was named to the academic all-state team for Class C-D for the 1993-1994 season. He played basketball and attended Calvin College for two years, and then Ferris State University for two years. Both colleges are in the Grand Rapids, Michigan, area.
