Harlem may evoke many things to many people who've resided there at some point in time but to the rest of the world, Harlem is simply known as New York's Black Mecca. From the Harlem Renaissance era to the Apollo Theater on 125th street, the hustle and spirit of the Manhattan neighborhood still lives on. The multi-layered identity of the area is what Thelma Golden, director and chief curator of the Studio Museum in Harlem, tried to capture in her new book of photography "Harlem: A Century of Images."
