In 2007, Grainger started a degree in English Literature at the University of Leeds, which she decided to continue with the Open University, due to her hectic filming schedule. She is of part-Italian descent through a grandfather. In May 2010, Grainger was named one of the 55 faces of the future in Nylon magazine's Young Hollywood Issue. In 2011, Grainger became a series regular on the Showtime television series The Borgias, portraying Lucrezia Borgia.
