Haymitch Abernathy is one of the main characters of Suzanne Collins's The Hunger Games trilogy. 24 years before the series begins, he became the victor for District 12, at the 50th Hunger Games. During the following years, he served as a mentor for the District 12 Tributes. Due to the horrors he experienced and his own pain at his forced participation, he became an alcoholic and spends most of his time drunk. After helping Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark win the Hunger Games, he gets involved in the rebellion against the Capitol and continues to help Katniss and Peeta, whom he now considers his family. Haymitch Abernathy was born in the futuristic world of Panem, previously the continent of North America.
