Groome was born in Nottingham, the daughter of Paul, a publican and chef who passed away in 2009 and Fiona, a drama and vocal coach. She trained at her Mum's Drama School, Nottingham Television Workshop and Derby Youth Theatre and attended Trent College. After her acting debut in the TV movie, A Fish Out of Water in 2001, Groome appeared in an episode of the short-lived TV series, Dangerville, playing an orphan. When Groome was just 14 years old, she landed her first feature film role in the well-received British independent film London to Brighton in 2006, playing a 12-year-old runaway.
