Biography: Gary Yates is a Canadian film director, producer and screenwriter, born in Montreal, Quebec. Yates' films have bowed at many of the world's most prestigious festivals including Sundance, Berlin, New York and Toronto. He has won awards for directing, producing and screenwriting, and was shortlisted for an Academy Award® Nomination for best live-action short. Yates was thrown out of Concordia University's film production program in Montreal, but continued directing independent shorts while writing the screenplay for his debut feature film, Seven Times Lucky. Seven Times Lucky premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, was nominated for six Genie Awards, and won Best Film and Best Screenplay at the Los Angeles Method Fest Film Festival. Yates wrote, produced and directed the film in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Though Seven Times Lucky failed to get picked up by any major American theatrical distributors it went on to become a festival favourite and critical darling. Variety raved: "The grifter movie reaches a level of unprecedented enjoyment and excitement in Seven Times Lucky. An absolute knockout of a feature debut." Yates' heist comedy High Life starring Timothy Olyphant was based on playwright Lee MacDougall's Dora-award-winning play of the same name. The film premiered at the Berlin Film Festival, was nominated for five Genie Awards, two Director's Guild Awards, and won Best Film at the Calgary International Film Festival. Johanna Schneller named High Life one of the ten best films of the year, and Variety wrote: " packs in more incident and twists than many movies 10 times its budget." LESS
