Frederick D. Burns was an important figure in Midwest amateur tennis in the early part of the 20th Century. Burns was a journalist by profession from 1911 to 1958, and in the 1920s was a writer for the Cincinnati Times-Star (which was absorbed by the Cincinnati Post in the 1950s). He wrote about tennis, and played the game, including playing in the National Clay Court Championships in 1915 and Cincinnati's own international tennis tournament, now known as the Cincinnati Masters, in 1916 and 1923.
