Richard Palmer Grant Dorcy, known as "Canary," (Powell) is an enlisted man in the United States Army. Currently stationed on the Hawaiian Islands, he has an affectionately argumentative relationship with his sergeant, Scrapper Thornhill (Pat O'Brien).
