Ginnie encounters an equally hard-boiled older man named Roy Sweeney and they travel together, Roy ultimately looking up his estranged son, Arlis. Passing the house where he grew up, Arlis comes to realize that Kay was the infant whose life was spared on the night of the long-ago murders.
