Fernando Arau began his career at the age of 5, tap dancing with his parents. In his early twenties, he hosted a kids' TV show. In 1991 he starred in Alcanzar una estrella II alongside a young Ricky Martin. In 1994, he moved to Miami, where he eventually became one of the hosts on Despierta América, along with Rafael Jose, Giselle Blondet, Ana Maria Canseco, and news anchor Neida Sandoval. He is the son of Alfonso Arau. He became a newborn Christian in the early 1990s.

On February 2, 2010, a series of interviews with rival network Telemundo's show Al Rojo Vivo revealed that Arau was unexpectedly let go along with 300 other employees. Arau mentions the network having spoken to him about his leaving but cited other possible reasons for his removal, namely his large compensation, his failed projects with the network, and even a small mention of past issues with his religious beliefs.
