The film has spawned a television series and spin-off, a stage musical, a reality competition series, and a 2009 film remake. According to the book FAB: An Intimate Life of Paul McCartney by Howard Sounes, the school portrayed in the film was a direct inspiration for the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA), of which Sir Paul McCartney is the lead patron. The original screenplay was titled Hot Lunch and this was the title for the film until part-way through shooting when Director Alan Parker noted a pornographic film showing on LESS
